SAFETY IN SOUND

Safety exists for us in so many forms. We may not be conscious of where or how we feel safe, or with whom. But what we know for sure is when we feel unsafe; this is a challenging and delicate space to be in.

We could spend a lifetime quest looking for our ‘safe space’; a physical place or idea, a piece of art, a person we love or a beloved pet. Throughout this quest, what we may overlook is that the true sense of feeling safe comes from within us. Safety is what we decide allows us to be the healthiest versions of ourselves, regardless of another’s perspective of what they feel is what we need.

We decide.

While there are many creative outlets that can support us through life’s challenging points, there is nothing quite like music. Without even realizing it, we’ve turned to music to assist us in managing so many personal experiences: excitement, joy, loss, desire, memory, sadness and stress. Our music can transport us to a simpler time in a matter of five beats; a time when we were most vulnerable and discovering our sense of self, which can bring us comfort. But music can also be triggering, isolating and sad; if we are not careful, it can overpower us.

I invite everyone to explore their own relationship with music and which pieces, voices or timbres make us feel safe. What changes in our body occur when this happens? What thoughts come up? And, most importantly, you decide how it makes you feel.

When it feels safe, hold on to that for future reference.

Take care of yourselves.
